27th Annual Mt. Washington Pancake Breakfast

Focus Chiropractic hosted a raffle that raised over $250 dollars for the Mt Washington PTA.  Raffle prizes included a Temperpedic pillow, massage gift certificate for your favorite teacher, a first aid kit and several Crayola Packs (including crayons markers and colored pencils). Focus also provided educational quiz questions with fun prizes for the kids who participated. We were impressed by the amount of students interested in Science and anatomy. Not surprising considering the schools wonderful reputation.

It was a very hot day but a great opportunity to meet all the family's. Thank you to all the amazing volunteers and faculty who made it out on this beautiful Saturday morning.

MAKE YOUR VERY OWN ICE PACK

This type of ice pack is easy to make.Plus you can make different sizes based on your needs.
Start with a good quality ziploc. I prefer Ziploc Freezer Bags because they tend to hold up better with multiple uses. I double bag mine but I always make sure the plastic is smooth since I have weird ways about me and how things need to be. (lol)

Start with a Zip-loc bag (one that will seal very well) and fill it with one part rubbing alcohol and two parts water. The alcohol keeps it from freezing completely, so you end up with a bag of slushy ice cold goodness, which is perfect for placing around your joints or molding to your body.

Feel free to add some blue food coloring in there and it will look just like the ice packs you buy or different colors to make it fun for the kids.

You can also make all different sizes, for all different size injuries. Small ones for your childs knee, or big ones for Daddy's back!

6 Tips to Holiday Health

6 Tips to Make The Holidays Healthy

As you recover from the lovely Thanksgiving holiday, and the abundance of Turkey renderings such as turkey sandwiches, turkey salads, or turkey stuffing and prepare for the next holiday here are 6 Holiday Health Tips to get you back on track with your regular routine.

1.    Eat a light snack prior to attending a holiday party. This is similar to not going grocery shopping while hungry. When you arrive hungry to a holiday party this increases the odds that you may overeat.

2.    Make exercise easy wherever you are. If you are staying out of town for the holidays and will not have access to a walking trail or a gym, bring a jump rope or exercise DVD to ensure you remain physically active.

3.    Substitute recipes. Does your traditional holiday recipe call for 5 pounds of sugar and three sticks of butter for one pound cake? You can substitute ingredients and quantities in your favorite holiday recipe without losing all the taste. Use half or more of the amounts of high calorie baking products such as butter, sugar, whole milk, syrup, chocolate etc.

4.    Watch for hidden calories. Your favorite holiday drinks such as eggnog, pumpkin latte, candy cane apple cider and others contain hidden calories.  Consider less calorie laden drinks or consider water as it is both hydrating and calorie free.

5.    Be careful with lifting! As you lift packages, frozen holiday treats and other heavy items be sure to lift with your legs and not your back. When lifting, hold objects close to your body while maintaining a slight arch in your lower back. Bend with your knees before standing up with the object you have lifted.

6.    Focus on Friends and Family. Although holidays are traditionally spent surrounding meals, remember to include friends and family in your routine. After a delicious meal, consider taking a group walk around your neighborhood or engaging in a friendly board game.

Focus Chiropractic wishes you and your family a Wonderful Holiday Season.

AKA Health Fair

Focus Chiropractic Continues Healthy Collaborations
In September 2011 Focus Chiropractic, Winner of the 2011 Pasadena Weekly Reader Recommended Best Chiropractor, had the pleasure of participating in the 4th Annual Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Health Summit held at the Jackie Robinson Community Center.
The theme of the health summit “Taking Control of Your Health Destiny” resonated well with the hundreds of summit attendees. Guests who stopped by Focus Chiropractic booth received a lovely care package, learned more about the importance of chiropractic health and were able to ask pertinent health questions of Dr. Kolleen Gregory.
The health summit celebrated a collaboration of local organizations, agencies, and groups who were interested in bringing health services to the Greater Pasadena community.  Other participating organizations included City of Hope, The City of Pasadena, The Pasadena Senior Center, and many others.
Focus Chiropractic was thrilled to participate in this exciting health summit, and looks forward to participating in next year’s summit.
